Four steps

How to make printable lined paper

  1. 1

    Choose a ruling

Pick college, wide, narrow or primary, or set your own spacing in millimetres.

  2. 2

    Set the margins

Adjust the four page margins and place the red margin line where you want it.

  3. 3

    Add the extras

Switch on a header area for name and date, and hole guides if the sheet goes in a binder.

  4. 4

    Print at 100%

Download the PDF and print with scaling at 100% so the ruling is exact.

Ruling sizes, and why they matter

Line spacing is not decoration, it is a legibility decision. Handwriting that is too large for the ruling becomes cramped and hard to read; too small and the page wastes space. The standard sizes exist because they map to how big people actually write at different ages.

RulingSpacingLines per Letter pageTypical user
Narrow6.35 mm (¼ in)~38Dense notes, small handwriting
College7.1 mm (9/32 in)~33Secondary school, university
Wide / legal8.7 mm (11/32 in)~27Primary school, larger writing
Primary12–15 mm~16Early years, with dashed midline

Setting up the margin

The red vertical line is a US convention, printed one inch (25.4 mm) from the left edge so that punched holes and binder rings never obscure text. UK exercise books usually use a narrower margin, and many people prefer none at all. All three are a single setting here.

If the sheet is going into a ring binder, widen the left page margin to at least 20 mm before switching on the hole guides, otherwise the punch removes the start of every line.

The header area

Turning on the header adds ruled space at the top for a name, date and subject. For a classroom set this is the difference between work you can hand back and a pile of anonymous sheets. It is also where a title belongs if the sheets will be filed.

For structured study notes, the Cornell notes template splits the page into cue, notes and summary. For letter formation, use handwriting practice paper or the name tracing worksheet. For plotting and diagrams, switch to graph paper. Writers tracking length may want the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

Line spacing. College ruled is 7.1 mm (9/32 inch) and fits about 33 lines on a US Letter page, the standard for secondary school and university. Wide ruled is 8.7 mm (11/32 inch) and fits about 27 lines, which suits primary-age children and anyone with larger handwriting.

Narrow 6.35 mm, college 7.1 mm, wide 8.7 mm, and primary 12–15 mm with a dashed midline. You can also set any custom spacing you like, useful for matching an existing notebook or for handwriting intervention work.

Yes, and its position and colour are both adjustable. The US convention places it 1 inch (25.4 mm) from the left edge; UK exercise books often use a narrower margin. Turn it off entirely for plain ruled paper.

Yes. Turn on the hole guides to mark where a two-, three- or four-hole punch should go, and increase the left margin so the punch never clips a line.

Yes, provided you print at 100%. The sheet is drawn in real millimetres as vector geometry, so a 7.1 mm ruling measures 7.1 mm on paper. Turn off “Fit to page” in the print dialog, that setting is what causes rulings to come out slightly compressed.

Yes, there is a switch above the preview. With it off, the exported sheet contains nothing but your ruling.
