Four steps

How to convert units

  1. 1

    Pick a category

Choose length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, data or time.

  2. 2

    Enter a value

Type the number you want to convert, the result updates as you type.

  3. 3

    Choose the units

Set the source and target units, or press swap to reverse the direction.

  4. 4

    Copy the result

Use the copy button, or read the full breakdown across every unit below.

Eight categories in one tool

Most conversion sites make you pick a category before you see anything. This one shows every unit in the active category simultaneously, which matters when you are working across systems, a designer moving between millimetres, inches, picas and pixels, or a cook translating a European recipe into US cups.

Exact factors, not approximations

The relationships between imperial and metric units are defined exactly by international agreement: one inch is exactly 25.4 mm, one pound is exactly 453.59237 g, and one mile is exactly 1,609.344 m. Those exact values are what this converter uses. Results are rounded for readability, but the arithmetic behind them carries full double precision.

The three traps worth knowing

Converting for print and screen

If you are converting in order to set up a sheet of paper, the graph paper generator takes spacing directly in millimetres, and there are ready-made presets for quarter-inch and 5 mm grids if you would rather not do the arithmetic. To verify a printed result, the calibrated on-screen ruler measures in both systems.

Frequently asked questions

Exactly 25.4 mm. That is a defined international standard rather than an approximation, which is why every inch-to-metric conversion on this site is exact. See the mm to inches page for a full reference table.

Because the temperature scales do not share a zero point. Celsius and Fahrenheit are offset from each other as well as differently scaled, so you cannot simply multiply, you need °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. The converter handles this automatically.

For web CSS the reference is 96 pixels per inch, and print typically uses 72 points per inch. Physical screen density is a separate matter, a 27-inch 4K monitor is around 163 real pixels per inch, which is why a CSS pixel is a reference unit rather than a physical one.

Not for volume. A US pint is 473 ml but an imperial pint is 568 ml, and US and imperial gallons differ by about 20%. Volume units here are US measures unless explicitly labelled imperial. Length and weight units are shared between the systems.

Drive manufacturers use decimal units, where 1 TB is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Operating systems often display binary units, where 1 TiB is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. The same drive is 1 TB and 0.909 TiB, nothing is missing, the two systems just count differently.
